GISELE BECKER

Gisèle Becker, Music Director of the Cantate Chamber Singers since 1994,

is one of the Washington area's leading choral conductors. Her vision of musical excellence and her commitment to imaginative programming, including commissions and premiere performances of new choral works, have earned her the highest admiration and respect from her professional colleagues and audiences alike.

In addition to her work with Cantate, Gisèle Becker is Assistant Conductor of the Washington Bach Consort, Chorus Master of the Cathedral Choral Society, and Choir Director at Arlington Presbyterian Church. Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. MILES CANADAY

Miles Canaday is Artistic Director of the Thomas Circle Singers, a 45-voice volunteer choir that partners with DC-based social service organizations. He joins TCS after four years as Assistant Professor of Music at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, where he was the Director of Choral Activities and designed courses in conducting and American music. During his time at Whitman, his ensembles appeared at a College Orchestra Directors Association (CODA) national conference and performed with the Walla Walla Symphony. Previously, Miles served as Visiting Director of Choirs at William & Mary, where he conducted over thirty performances on campus and on tour. As Assistant Conductor of the Eastman-Rochester Chorus, Miles conducted Duruflé’s Requiem and prepared the ensemble for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem with the Rochester Philharmonic. As a baritone, he has sung with professional choirs such as Yale Schola Cantorum, St. Martin’s Chamber Choir (Denver), Colorado Bach Ensemble, and Voices (Rochester, NY). 

Canaday holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with William Weinert and received the Walter Hagen Prize in Conducting. Miles completed a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from Yale School of Music, studying with Marguerite Brooks and Jeffrey Douma. Miles graduated with a B.A. in music with honors from Harvard College, where he studied conducting with Jameson Marvin and Federico Cortese and was President of the Harvard Glee Club.
