The Mission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. In the faithful pursuit of this mission, St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church is seeking a (Tenor/Alto) singer to provide music as a quartet, as well as occasionally performing solo repertoire and serving as a section leader in larger ensembles, for regular Masses in the Ordinary and Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. This will include approximately one call per month, with additional calls for Christmas and Holy Week. Singers are also given first right of refusal for other services held at the Parish, including weddings and funerals. For a near-final draft of the coming year’s schedule, follow this link.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A pleasant singing voice with the ability to blend in a small group and sing solo repertoire;
  • Excellent sight-reading ability and the ability to hold one voice part alone;
  • Extensive experience singing in a church setting;
  • Familiarity with the musical patrimony of the Church, especially Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant;
  • Familiarity with the Rites of the Church, including the Extraordinary Form (Traditional Latin Mass);
  • Undergraduate degree (or equivalent experience) in vocal performance.

This is a part-time position, paying $150 per call (1 hour rehearsal followed by approx. 1 hour service). Extra rehearsals are rare, but if necessary, would be compensated at an hourly rate of $75. At this point in time, we are anticipating a minimum of 15 calls over the course of the year.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, August 15th, from 12:30 – 4:30 PM. The audition should take no longer than 15 minutes (more details below). After your registration is processed, you’ll receive an email within 24 hours confirming your audition and outlining the social distancing requirements that will be in effect. Auditions at other times can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis.

Audition repertoire will consist of the following:

  1. Panis Angelicus, Cesar Franck
  2.  A sacred solo in English chosen by you, not to exceed four (4) minutes in length
  3. A sight-reading exercise drawn from Renaissance polyphony.

Interested parties should follow this link and fill out the form, attaching your resume and a .pdf copy of your selected audition piece. A .pdf copy of Panis Angelicus, one for high voice (A Major) and one for low voice (F Major), is also provided at the link for your convenience.
