MUSIC FOR CHILDREN

posted 9/2/10

St. Paul’s Parish, K Street

With strong support from the church and from parents, our choir program continues to flourish in discipline, consistency, and excellence. Our choirs offer a rare opportunity for children to master a large body of music while performing weekly at a professional level. The girls’ choir sings with skilled adult singers each Sunday at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, while each Sunday evening boys join the men in the Choir of Men and Boys, one of the few of its type remaining in this country. Although the boys’ and girls’ choirs are separate — rehearsing and singing independently — they sing together on special occasions.

Download color flyer here

In additional to the weekly services, extraordinary cultural opportunities await boy and girl choristers. Our choristers have been invited to perform with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, under the baton of such noted conductors as Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Leonard Slatkin, and Christopher Hogwood. We have toured in recent years to New York City, Philadelphia, and Williamsburg, Virginia. About once every two to three years the choirs record a professional CD on the higly-regarded Pro Organo label. The newest, We Sing of God, was released in the Summer of 2010.

Gaining Skills for Life

Singing in a good choir is much more than a typical after-school activity. It is an exceptional educational opportunity, and can be an essential part of a child’s learning and development. Here at St. Paul’s, choristers are introduced to the world of great music: from classic hymns and Gregorian chants, to Renaissance motets in Latin, Bach chorales in German, and the tradition of English cathedral music.

Great emphasis is given to music-reading skills, with each child receiving significant individual attention. We offer a musical education similar to what children might receive as choristers of Westminster Abbey or St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. After several years in our choirs, boys and girls have highly-trained voices, refined skills of tuning and blend with other singers, and exceptional sight-reading abilities (the latter often surpassing that of many adult musicians). Alumni of St. Paul’s boys’ and girls’ choirs leave as experienced musicians.

A choir camp is typically held for several days in Agust, including rehearsals, services, and social activities. Beyond our musical work together, we share many occasions of fun and fellowship, from movie outings to bowling and pizza. Lifelong friends are made as choristers and as choir parents; carpools, sleepovers, daytrips, and parties, enriched by the wonder of making music together, encourage teamwork and bonding rarely found in other activities. The wide range of ages (7-14 for boys and 7-18 for girls) allows younger children to learn from, and be mentored by, more experienced choristers.

While many of our choir alumni go on to work as professional musicians, all of them leave with a broad understanding of musicianship and music-making.

Since few children, particularly boys, can envision the enjoyment and reward of a choir experience, parental initiative and involvement is critical when considering membership. Parents will find a network of support awaiting them, including carpooling from many locations in the Washington, D.C. area. In addition, St. Paul’s is easily reachable from the Foggy Bottom Metro stop.

Becoming a Chorister

Children may enter the choir at any time. Please phone or email the director of music for further information, or to arrange an informal interview and audition. Interested parents and their children are also invited to attend rehearsal or a service at any time.

No prior training or experience is expected of prospective choristers, and the families do not have to be affiliated with St. Paul’s or any other religious tradition. Unlike many comparable professional children’s choirs, there is no tuition cost expected of parents apart from minor incidentals relating to travel or social events, In fact, a small stipend is paid each chorister, based on leadership and performance, underscoring the seriousness of the commitment that has been made to the choir by each child. Your commitment of time and energy balances St. Paul’s investment in the hundreds of teaching hours needed to make our choir thrive. While the schedule may seem daunting at first, parents quickly find it becomes a manageable and incredibly worthwhile part of each week’s activities, especially with the support available from other parents.

Weekly Schedule

Girls’ Choir meets Thursday from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Sunday Mass from 8:30 – 10:15 a.m.

Boys’ Choir meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. (choose two of three)
Sunday Evensong from 4:45 – 7:00 p.m.

POLYHYMNIA AUDITIONS

posted 8/25/10

September 7, 2010 at 7:45 PM
September 14, 2010 at 7:45 PM

Polyhymnia, an a cappella chamber choir that has charmed Washington area audiences for 19 years, will audition sopranos and basses for our Fall/Winter "semester" (Schedule of rehearsals and performances available at PolyhymniaSings.org).  Singers must be technically proficient.  Dues are $80.  Regular weekly rehearsals are Tuesdays 7:45 PM to 10:00 PM.  There also are two extra Thursday rehearsals in the two weeks preceding the first concert weekend.  Our Winter 2011 performances will occur on the weekends of January 29/30 and February 5/6.  Singers must commit to missing no more than three rehearsals and none of the performances.  There are no obligations to sell tickets or do fundraising.

The Winter program will feature works by Darius Milhaud and Michael Praetorius, as well as British folksongs and African choruses.

Rehearsals and auditions occur in the basement of:

    The Church in Bethesda
    5033 Wilson Lane
    Bethesda, MD 20814
    (Directions available at PolyhymniaSings.org)

To get to the basement, auditioners must enter through the back door.  Walk down the driveway to the left of the church.  The back entrance will be well lighted.

All auditioners should arrive at 7:45 PM.  You need not prepare a song, and you will not be asked to sight-read anything cold.  Instead, I will rehearse all of you plus Polyhymnia veterans on a piece of music that no one is likely to have seen before.  After I have rehearsed you together for about one-half hour on this piece, we will break the group into quartets that will sing the piece we have just rehearsed.  Auditioners get multiple quartet trials with differing singers on the other parts.  Every effort is made to help the auditioner put his or her best foot forward.

If there are further questions, please contact me:

posted 5/7/10

The National Philharmonic Chorale is pleased to announce auditions for its 2010-2011 Season!

“The National Philharmonic Chorale’s performance of Handel’s Messiah, led by Stan Engebretson, was “energized with fleet tempos, crisp attacks and choral phrasing that was handsomely blended but responsive to the score’s biggest moments.”

----The Washington Post

Be part of the nearly 200-member Chorale and perform throughout the year at the beautiful Concert Hall at the Music Center at Strathmore.

Works to be performed in 2010-2011 include Mahler Symphony No. 2, Berlioz Requiem, Mozart, Coronation Mass; Handel, Messiah; and Verdi, Requiem
The Chorale is planning a summer tour to Italy, so plans are underway to prepare summer repertoire for that exciting performance opportunity as well. Members of the National Philharmonic Chorus have participated in projects in Germany, Australia, China (for a pre-Olympic presentation of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9), and will be traveling to Iceland this June.

Auditions are on May 11 and by appointment. To sign up and learn more about audition requirements, visit www.nationalphilharmonic.org. You will be contacted to set up your individual appointments.
