Russian Chamber Chorus of Washington
posted 4/22/10
We would like to see if there is any potential interest in forming a Russian Chamber Chorus which would specialize in Russian church repertory. Presently, there is none, but wouldn’t it be truly wonderful if we formed one?
No ability to read Church Slavonic is necessary – all the help with pronunciation and coaching will be provided by native speakers. (Music is available in Latin transliteration from Musica Russica.) This would not be an all-season stint, more likely a nominal number of rehearsals followed by a concert or two. Looking for people who like to sing, who can read music, who can sing on pitch, interested in this type of music, and in the whole experience of singing in ensemble.
The optimal number of singers is as follows:
A) If only four-part music is sung, then 12 singers is a minimum (3 sopranos, 3 altos, 3 tenors, 3 basses)
B) If we sing divisi (which is 80% of the Russian choral repertory), then 25 choristers is a minimum (3 first sopranos, 3 second sopranos, 3 first altos, 3 second altos, 3 first tenors, 3 second tenors, 3 baritones, 4 basses).
There is a potential rehearsal space in a church in Alexandria, VA. Once we have a critical mass, we will collectively choose rehearsal time and the schedule suitable to all the participants.
