Previous church choir experience is desirable.  Repertoire is broad-ranging and eclectic.  Additional opportunities for monthly solos for a 0745 service, in addition to some weddings and funerals.
Pay is $75 per call. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 8:00-9:30 p.m. There is one Sunday morning service at 10:30 a.m., with occasional additional services throughout the year. The choir sings year-round with some rehearsals off in the summer.  The one year contract begins October 1, 2008.

back to topAlto Section Leader

posted 7/19/10

The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Bethesda, Maryland, seeks an alto section leader for its Adult Choir. A primarily volunteer ensemble of some 30 voices, the Adult Choir provides musical leadership for the 10:30 a.m. Choral Eucharist each Sunday (early September through early June) and for special liturgies throughout the year (e.g. Requiem Mass, Lessons & Carols, Choral Evensong, etc.)

In addition to leading the singing of congregational hymns and service music, the Adult Choir sings a musical setting of the appointed psalm (Anglican Chant or plainsong), an offertory anthem, and a communion anthem each Sunday. Rehearsal is held on Thursday evening, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. (late August through early June). Call time on Sunday morning is 9:15 a.m. Stipend is negotiable. Average of eight calls per month.

The alto section leader must possess strong sight-reading skills, the ability to blend, and a congenial attitude. S/he must be available for services on Christmas Eve and during Holy Week. Position includes opportunities for solo work.

The Church of the Redeemer is located on Dunrobbin Drive, just off MacArthur Boulevard, across from Glen Echo Park. The church is easily accessible from the Capital Beltway, River Road, and Massachusetts Avenue.

For more information, or to schedule an audition, please contact Thomas Smith, Director of Music: 301.229.3770 ext. 16 or music.redeemer@verizon.net

back to topAlto for Schola Cantorum

posted 7/19/10

Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle (R.C.) 1725 Rhode Island Avenue NW Washington, DC 20036

There is currently an opening for an Alto in the Schola Cantorum of the cathedral. Schola members sing for both the 10:00am (Latin) and 11:30am (English) Sunday Eucharists in one of the most rewarding acoustic settings in the area. Because of the nature of the music (Gregorian chant, renaissance polyphony and later anthems), and amount of repertoire each week, prospective singers must have significant adult choral experience, excellent sight-reading skills, and a pleasant, agile voice. The commitment of time and focused energy is significant, particularly at Christmas and Holy Week. Extra singing opportunities include Archdiocesan liturgies and civic and community functions (annual Red Mass, state funerals) and concerts. Professionals sing with 11 other professionals and up to 12 auditioned volunteers.

Season: Sept 1 – January 9, and March 2 – June 26.

Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 6:45pm – 8:45pm.

$150 typical week (1 rehearsal, 2 services) $50 per call beyond typical (Approx 36 additional calls)

back to topMust Love Monteverdi

posted 3/4/10

Monteverdi Geek Squad is a small and informal musical society that meets once a month in DC to perform, usually one-on-a-part, a cappella works by Monteverdi and his Italian contemporaries.  In the spirit of chamber music, meetings are an end in themselves: the purpose of the group is not to prepare public performances, but to enjoy good music, cheese, bread, and wine in a relaxed atmosphere.
The group is looking for 3-4 additional singers (alto, tenor and bass) who are knowledgeable/interested in Monteverdi’s music, have solid early music experience and good vibrato control, are excellent sight readers, and enjoy fun and good wine.
