All Souls Episcopal Church, Washington, DC

SATB Section Leader Positions from September 2008

All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church, 2300 Cathedral Avenue, NW, is seeking four section leaders from September 2008. There is a Sung Mass on Sundays at 11:00am, where worship follows the form and traditions of the Book of Common Prayer (Rite One). The repertoire embraces a wide range of Anglican music, from plainsong to modern.

Services begin on the Sunday closest to Labor Day (September 7th in 2008) and continue until Trinity Sunday. There are additional services for Advent, All Souls, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter. Rehearsals take place before the service from 9:15–10:45am and after it from 12:30-1:00pm. Approximately four extra rehearsals will be called during the year on either Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons in preparation for special services: advance notice will be given and attendance will be required.

Remuneration for Sunday mornings is $100. Extra rehearsals and services will be paid at $50 per call.

The successful applicants will be excellent readers with advanced and flexible vocal and personal skills. As section leaders, the singers will provide leadership and sensitive support to the experienced, amateur choir members; they will sing a wide range of music with appropriate vocal style and awareness of good performing practice. Frequent opportunities will exist for the section leaders to sing as soloists and as a consort, often a cappella. Reliable, prompt attendance and careful preparation are essential. Singers will be required to provide substitutes for any absences, for which advance notice must be given.

All Souls offers a friendly, diverse and welcoming congregation. The congregation and rector are both knowledgeable about and appreciative of music of a high standard. All Souls has recently appointed Philip Cave as Director of Music, who brings with him wide experience as a singer and choir-trainer, and the church hopes that its music will continue to draw people into the community of All Souls.

Further information about the church is available at www.allsoulsdc.org; prospective singers are invited to contact Philip Cave for further information by e-mail at allsouls1@aol.com or by phone (202 232-4244). See also www.philipcave.net

Bass

Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle (R.C.) 1725 Rhode Island Avenue NW Washington, DC 20036

There is currently an opening for one Bass in the Schola Cantorum of the cathedral. Schola members sing for both the 10:00am (Latin) and 11:30am (English) Sunday Eucharists. Because of the nature of the music (Gregorian chant, renaissance polyphony and later anthems), and amount of repertoire each week (the equivalence of six anthems each week), prospective singers must have significant adult choral experience, excellent sight-reading skills, and a pleasant, agile voice. The commitment of time and focused energy is significant, particularly at Christmas and Holy Week. Extra singing opportunities include Archdiocesan liturgies and civic and community functions (annual Red Mass, state funerals) and concerts. Professionals sing with 11 other professionals and up to 12 auditioned volunteers.
Season: August 27 – January 11, February 11 – June 14.
Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 6:45pm – 8:45pm.
$150 typical week (1 rehearsal, 2 services) $50 per call beyond typical
