SP-KAlto Section Leader Position

St. Paul’s Parish, K Street, (at 25th Street near the Foggy Bottom metro), is looking for an alto section leader to begin on or around November 1, 2008.

St. Paul’s has a uniquely strong tradition of Anglican choral music with a high national profile. The semi-professional adult parish choir, about 25 strong, sings each Sunday, twelve months a year, at the 11:15 AM Solemn Mass. The call time is 10:30 AM. Each Sunday’s repertoire includes a complete setting of the Mass ordinary, anthems, motets, and Gregorian propers, all chosen from the great treasury of Western church music. The choir rehearses each Thursday evening from 7:00-9:30 PM (7:00-8:30 in the summer). Choir members also alternate week-by-week, singing for the 9:00 AM Sung Mass on Sundays (at which the repertoire is less demanding and the fee is $35.00), and for Mass on occasional weekday holy days. The fee for each call (other than the 9:00 AM Mass) is $52.50, with approximately 125 calls per year (about $6500).

Required skills include extremely strong sight-reading ability and ensemble singing experience, ability to blend and to sing in a style appropriate to Anglican church music and Renaissance polyphony, and to make music in a positive, demanding, and rewarding atmosphere of collegiality.

Those interested should make their inquiry to Robert McCormick, Director of Music, at McCormick@stpauls-kst.com or 202-337-2020, ext. 14. Further information may be found online at www.stpauls-kst.com.

All Souls Episcopal Church, Washington, DC

SATB Section Leader Positions from September 2008

All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church, 2300 Cathedral Avenue, NW, is seeking four section leaders from September 2008. There is a Sung Mass on Sundays at 11:00am, where worship follows the form and traditions of the Book of Common Prayer (Rite One). The repertoire embraces a wide range of Anglican music, from plainsong to modern.

Services begin on the Sunday closest to Labor Day (September 7th in 2008) and continue until Trinity Sunday. There are additional services for Advent, All Souls, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter. Rehearsals take place before the service from 9:15–10:45am and after it from 12:30-1:00pm. Approximately four extra rehearsals will be called during the year on either Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons in preparation for special services: advance notice will be given and attendance will be required.

Remuneration for Sunday mornings is $100. Extra rehearsals and services will be paid at $50 per call.

The successful applicants will be excellent readers with advanced and flexible vocal and personal skills. As section leaders, the singers will provide leadership and sensitive support to the experienced, amateur choir members; they will sing a wide range of music with appropriate vocal style and awareness of good performing practice. Frequent opportunities will exist for the section leaders to sing as soloists and as a consort, often a cappella. Reliable, prompt attendance and careful preparation are essential. Singers will be required to provide substitutes for any absences, for which advance notice must be given.

All Souls offers a friendly, diverse and welcoming congregation. The congregation and rector are both knowledgeable about and appreciative of music of a high standard. All Souls has recently appointed Philip Cave as Director of Music, who brings with him wide experience as a singer and choir-trainer, and the church hopes that its music will continue to draw people into the community of All Souls.

Further information about the church is available at www.allsoulsdc.org; prospective singers are invited to contact Philip Cave for further information by e-mail at allsouls1@aol.com or by phone (202 232-4244). See also www.philipcave.net
